      The "Spanish feminist theory" of my title actually refers to two very different phenomena, which I hope will coalesce in a meaningful way as my exposition unfolds. Spanish femi nist theory "now" concerns criticism of twentieth-century Spanish literature that takes a feminist perspective.1 Femi nist theory "then" indicates feminist theory.   Any examination of Latina feminist literature must acknowledge that this area of study, like the identity of women of Latin American heritage, is a complex phenomenon.
